What is a Cot Mattress?

A cot mattress is a specially designed mattress for newborns and younger infants. As the name suggests, it is supposed to fit furniture such as baby cots and bassinets. Cot mattresses are smaller and firmer compared to toddler mattresses or regular mattresses as they are designed to keep your babies safe while sleeping.

Types of Cot Mattresses

Much like regular mattresses, there are several types of baby cot mattresses. These are usually made of different materials such as foam, natural fibres, or a combination of various materials.

Australia currently does not have standard cot mattress sizes, although some sizes are more common or popular. Currently, most manufacturers design their cot mattresses to fit their own furniture. Additionally, some cot mattresses have irregular shapes to fit specific cribs, bassinets, and cots. 

If you are buying a new mattress, here are some rule-of-thumb measurements to keep in mind.  Always check that the mattress you are interested in buying will safely fit in the cot or bassinet you are buying it for: 

Standard Cot Mattress: 130cm long x 69cm wide 

Compact Cot Mattress: 108cm long x 53cm wide 

Bassinet Mattress: 70-80cm long x 30-40cm wide 

Do note that these may not be an exact fit for your specific cot, bassinet, or crib. For instance, cot mattresses for portacots and irregularly shaped bassinets and cots do not have a standard measurement. Make sure to check the recommended manufacturer measurements for a perfect fit. 

Choosing a Cot Mattress for Your Baby

Selecting a cot mattress is a matter of both comfort and safety. While a soft mattress may seem comfortable, it may not be the best option for babies who can’t turn their heads yet. Aside from firmness, you’d also want to look at the overall state of the mattress including measurement and ensure that it follows cot and bassinet safety guidelines. 

Here are some factors to keep in mind when choosing a cot mattress: 

Firmness

Ensure the mattress is firm enough to provide ample support for your baby's developing spine. When in doubt, it is best to choose a firmer mattress over a soft one. A firm surface reduces the risk of suffocation and helps maintain a safe sleep environment.

Check that the mattress fits snugly within the cot or bassinet, leaving no gaps that could pose an entrapment hazard. Avoid buying a mattress that is too big as well, as squishing the mattress could cause it to become deformed. A good rule of thumb is to check the gaps between the cot or bassinet and the mattress – the mattress should fit snugly around on all sides with a maximum 2cm gap one each side when the mattress is centred.

Opt for high-quality materials that are durable and hypoallergenic. Look for cot mattresses made from breathable fabrics to promote airflow and regulate temperature, reducing the risk of overheating. Aside from the materials, it’s also important to ensure that there are no signs of wear and tear, as well as cushioned parts which may pose a risk.

Set a budget that aligns with your preferences and priorities. While it's tempting to choose the cheapest option, investing in a quality mattress ensures long-term comfort and safety for your baby.
